Description: The last official determination of the detailed Kansas River Mileage, including the Republican and Smoky Hill River drainages, is the document dated 20 February 1969, revised 25 November 1969. In 2012, the Corps of Engineers developed a current river mileage point file for the Kansas River based on recent aerial photography (NAIP 2012). The river mileage determination represents an update to the listing in the 1969 Kansas River Mileage document currently in use. The revised determination extends along the main stem of the Kansas River from its confluence with the Missouri River to its source at the confluence of the Republican and Smoky Hill Rivers near Junction City. The Kansas River is a dynamic river through most of its length. Since 1969 the Kansas River morphology has changed somewhat, as some river bends have expanded and others have been cut off. In addition, it appears that there was an unresolved discrepancy in the determination of river mileages upstream of Manhattan. The 1969 centerline showed the source of the Kansas River at the confluence of the two tributaries just downstream of Junction City as River Mile 170.4. The 2012 revision shows the source of the Kansas River as River Mile 169.5. This is not a big difference in total length, but the river mileages for individual points along the river have changed by up to 2.5 miles. This revision only affects the mileage determinations along the main stem of the Kansas River. It does not affect the mileage determinations along tributaries, such as those for the Big Blue or Delaware Rivers. Nor does it affect the 1969 river mileage determinations for the Smoky and Republican Rivers. The two tributaries join at Junction City to form the Kansas River, with the tributary river mileage beginning at 0.0 at the confluence. The physical location of the confluence has not changed since the 1969 river mileage revision. The confluence location of the Kansas River with the Missouri River centerline remains the same. No attempt was made to revise the Drainage Area determinations in the 1969 river mileage document.
