PA Project title/name: Sunset & Ridgeview Traffic Signal
PA Agency type: City
PA Agency Name: Olathe, KS
PA Primary project mode: Roadway
PA Secondary project mode: Pedestrian
PA Project type: Road & Bridge - Traffic Flow
PA Project description: This project will add a traffic signal to the intersection of Sunset Drive and Ridgeview Road. Improvements will include traffic signal, minor geometric improvements and streetlights. This project will also include pedestrian crosswalks and connections across Ridgeview Road.
PA Connected KC 2050 Project Number: No
PA Connected KC 2050 underlying strategies selected
PA Strategies Description: By adding pedestrian accommodations at the new traffic signal, this project will increase the walkability of an existing activity center. The project will also increase mobility and accessibility for all system users, support efficient movement of people, goods and services, foster safe travel and reduce pollutants by reducing delays.
PA Complete Streets Description: This project will provide additional pedestrian access to the area. There are multiple developments recently constructed in the area including independent living facilities for ages 55 and above. Ridgeview Village is an existing low income apartment facility located at this intersection and there is also a nursing home facility along Sunset just west of this intersection. This signal and increased pedestrian access will accommodate transportation disadvantaged populations as well as those in the 55 and older facility.
PA Safety: The traffic signal will be connected to the ATMS facilities and will be run on detection to allow for unecessary stopping along the corridor. The signal will also improve awareness and visibility of a minor road approach. The project will also provide protected crossings for pedestrians across Ridgeview Road.
PA Air Quality: The signal will be connected to the ATMS network to allow for coordination with other signals to manage traffic flowto improve drive times and to reduce air polution.

Having personal experience driving through this intersection on almost a daily basis this is a high priority/relatively low cost improvement. My wife was nearly broadsided at this intersection by an oncoming vehicle that hit the median to avoid collision. The application is correct in that the amount of recent development and traffic volumes warrant a signal.

Out of the projects listed, this would make the bottom two on the list.

I drive this area almost daily and the traffic just increases daily. Without a light there is going to be tragic accidents as kids and parents are going to events

As someone who lives in the area and drives by this intersection daily, there needs to be a light here. It is difficult to see oncoming traffic since it is coming up a hill when you are trying to turn left on Sunset. A light would also provide a crosswalk opportunity to cross Ridgeview for the residents living in the area.

I have lived next to this intersection for over 15 years and the traffic is heavier than normal because of the Ridgeview and Santa Fe construction. I am not interested in having a traffic signal right next to these houses. When the light is red at Sunset, neither north or southbound streets will have excess room for the cars lining up waiting for the light to turn green. It is also going to block the driveways of several houses from the corner and interrupt traffic flow out of the neighborhood. From someone that actually uses this intersection multiple times a day, finds this proposal quite unnecessary.

If a traffic light is added, can we please ensure northbound and southbound traffic signals on Ridgeview are coordinated? I live in NWT and it’s ridiculous that the lights from 119th to K-10 are not synchronized. I think this is what causes people to rush and thus make risky driving decisions.
