Pre-Application Information

PA Project title/name: Drive on Sunshine - Johnson County Solar Powered Pool Vehicle Program
PA Agency type: County
PA Agency Name: Johnson County, KS
PA Primary project mode: Operations
PA Secondary project mode: Other
PA Project type: Alternative Fuel Vehicles & Infrastructure
PA Project description: Johnson County would like to purchase four fully autonomous, transportable, solar powered electric vehicle charging stations for use at county facilities. In addition, we are requesting eight fully electric vehicles to replace existing fossil fuel units from our current fleet. The intent is to create a solar powered, vehicle pool. By pooling vehicles, we have an opportunity to expose more users to electric vehicles while normalizing EV’s as true feasible alternative. The EV ARC solar charging units are easily transportable and will give us the flexibility to deploy the units to any location. In addition to the benefits of true Off-grid charging and reduced vehicle emissions, the charging stations include power panels which allow them to be deployed for use in emergency response scenarios
PA Connected KC 2050 Project Number: No
PA Connected KC 2050 underlying strategies selected
PA Strategies Description: The EV ARC (Electric Vehicle Autonomous Renewable Charger) is the worlds first and only fully autonomous, transportable, solar powered electric vehicle charging station. It is designed, engineered and manufactured in the US. Each of Johnson Countys EV ARC units can generate and store enough clean, solar electricity to charge up to 225 miles of electric driving in a single day. Thanks to its battery storage, it can charge electric vehicles day or night, or even during periods of cloudiness, and is also an excellent source of emergency/alternative energy. The electricity produced is clean and renewable, reducing 100% of greenhouse gas emissions from ICE vehicles and electric vehicles powered from the grid. The EV ARC is rapidly deployed and does not require a building permit in most jurisdictions. It does not require civil or electrical engineering, foundations, trenching, electrical connections or upgrades. It will produce energy reliably and consistently but will never generate a utility bill.
PA Complete Streets Description: NA
PA Safety: NA
PA Air Quality: This plan implements the use of a fully autonomous, transportable, solar powered electric vehicle charging station. Coupled with our proposed EV pool car system, we will remove and replace eight fossil fuel vehicles with EVs that are charged by true renewable energy (sunshine). Fully implemented, this proposal of four units could replace 900 miles a day of ICE driving with 100% off grid powered electric vehicle transportation. In addition, use of the EVs in a pool setting allows for widespread normalization of electric vehicles as alternatives to traditional ICE vehicles.

PA CMT Description: This project will promote ride sharing and car sharing by deployment of Electric Vehicles in a shared pool system controlled with a fully automated vehicle checkout system which is already in place at Johnson County (Pool Car). The public education around the use of Evs, the normalization of them as a feasible alternative to carbon based vehicles, and the experience of solar powered charging all support the public education campaign.
