Pre-Application Information

PA Project title/name: Bluff Trail Enhancements
PA Agency type: City
PA Agency Name: Weston, MO
PA Primary project mode: Bike/Pedestrian
PA Secondary project mode: Bike/Pedestrian
PA Project type: Non-Motorized Transportation - Recreation Trails
PA Project description: Improve the connection between Downtown Weston with the Weston Bend State Park along South Bluff Trail by paving a dedicated trail for pedestrians and bicyclists alongside the existing road to enhance the safety of cyclists and walkers while also leaving access to the homes along the trail. Including additional signage along the route to indicate and highlight its presence.
PA Connected KC 2050 Project Number: Yes
PA Connected KC 2050 underlying strategies selected
PA Strategies Description: The south bluff trail is utilized by residents and visitors alike as a great way to get exercise by walking from downtown Weston to the Weston Bend State Park and on to Beverly, MO. Currently, the only route to the State Park from downtown parking lots is via a stretch of road approximately 0.8 miles long that has no sidewalks and is fairly narrow and pothole-ridden. The connecting roads to the Bluff Road either do not have sidewalks or do not have sidewalks on the appropriate side to prevent users walking in the street. This project would allow for us to provide a safer route to the State Park portion of the trail through a dedicated non-motor vehicle pathway from downtown Westons parking areas along Market Street, Welt Street, and South Bluff Road.
PA Complete Streets Description: The project will be considered completed when there is a designated walking/riding path that allows for two lanes of traffic for pedestrians and cyclists. The materials will likely consist of a concrete path overlayed with asphalt and painted to indicate direction and modes of travel.
PA Safety: Although we have been fortunate to have no recent issues, this project will aim to prevent any future pedestrian or cyclist injuries/fatalities by getting those individuals out of the driving lane and onto a designated and clearly marked pedestrian/cyclist trail. We will be utilizing signage to indicate and highlight the presence of the trail.
PA Air Quality: This project will better enable residents to walk or ride their bicycles from their homes rather than driving their vehicles out to the state park and hiking the trails there. This also gives visitors the chance to park in one spot to enjoy all that the Weston area has to offer rather than parking at the State Park for a hike and then coming into Weston to enjoy the downtown.
PA Conservation: Part of the project will be to put a stormwater runoff bin in on Market street to collect and divert rain water from the roadway into the creek.
PA Environment: This project will not address these items.
